He has always claimed his ten-year marriage is strong enough to withstand his one-man mission to fix the world’s social ills.
But TV chef Jamie Oliver has admitted his workload and travelling rankle with his wife Jools, who ‘doesn’t get’ what he does.
He added: ‘We love each other to bits, but I don’t think marriage is easy.’
'She doesn't get what I do': Jamie says his workload can be a strain on his marriage
Jamie, 36, who has four children with Jools, 37, said: ‘I take sufficient weekends and holidays a year for any British woman but that doesn’t mean I get thanked. You could take another week off and it wouldn’t make any difference. You’d still get a b*********.
‘So I suggest you just get on with it. Put on your bullet-proof Batfink wings. I get a b********* all the time and I’m on seven weeks’ holiday a year, with most weekends off. It’s normal.’
Asked how ex-model Jools feels when he’s off on a trip, Jamie, whose projects include a US anti-obesity campaign, said: ‘I try not to tell her. She doesn’t necessarily get everything I do.
She’s like, “Why do you care? If you’re not going over there and doing it for money, why do you care?”
‘I’ve probably managed to convince more journalists about why but probably, to be honest, I give them more time than her.’
However, he insisted he won’t give up work as ‘life’s too short’.
He went on: ‘If I come home and give her the 360 on everything I’m doing then that’s another eight-hour day. I’m not a worrier but she is a worrier. I don’t need that and she doesn’t need that, so we’re in a bit of a rut.’
Jamie, worth £106 million, says he is now ‘disengaged’ from government and will use his wealth for pet projects. ‘If I want to go into Essex and fit out 20 school kitchens and put a rude boy team in, then I’ll do it,’ he said.
