Dont Act the Fool

Remember when I met Kevin Costner and how giddy I was? I'm not surprised to hear that most people act silly when they meet someone from the silver screen.A friend of mine once ran into the famous Val Kilmer at a sandwich shop. {This is how I remember her telling the story, the facts may be a bit fudged}
He was in front of her and when he turned around she gasped and stammered...

"You are the greatest swordsman that has ever lived!"

 He looked at her funny and walked away.
Of ALL the classic Val Kilmer movies, she choose to quote "Willow"?! {That movie gave me nightmares}
I mean, "The Saint" is one of the greatest movies that was ever made. She could have said something like,

 "I-I'm overwhelmed. You found me."

Ok that would probably get you the stink eye as well. Probably best NOT to quote lines from their films. So how DO you act around someone you've oogled and drooled over in the back of a movie theatre?
{Or any famous person for that matter. They dont have to be good looking, you can still act ridiculous around anyone famous.}

Here are some ideas:
  • Dont lurk or be creepy about it. They are normal people too. Its super stalker-ish to hide behind something while trying to catch a glimpse. Dont stare either. {That goes for anyone, even non famous people. Its just rude.}

  • Even though you feel like you know them. You dont. And they dont know you. So its probably best not to ask a personal question like, "Hey Lindsay, how was rehab?" Awkward.

  • Dont cry. You've seen those teenage girls who cry at The Beatles concerts or ok... *cough*... Justin Beiber. {gag}. Dont cry. Its pathetic.

  • Dont propose. They will most likely say no.

  • Say something like; “Hi, my name is Lauren and I really admire you’re work.” Instead of, “Heehee hee eehee hee, eehee hee, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!” You'll look like an idiot.

  • Resist the urge to throw your arms around their neck and smother them with hundreds of kisses. Also dont wrap your arms around their leg and beg them to take you with them. Again, awkward. Unless you are a baby, drooling is NOT attractive.

  • Address them by their REAL name and not the name of their characters. So if you see Robert Pattinson on the street dont chase him shouting, "Edward! Edward!" You WILL get arrested.

  • If they are a reality star, PLEASE dont approach them and fuel their ego. They dont need anymore of that. {Examples of these 'celebs' are: Kate Gossling, Snookie, Vienna and Paris Hilton just to name a few.}

  • My last rule for now is if the celebrity you spot is Johnny Depp the first thing you must do is pull out your phone and message me asap. I would be greatly appreciated it and I will meet you wherever you are at.
WHEW! Hopefully you can remember all that!

After its all said and done you can go back home and brag to all of your friends. Pretty sure you can trump any of their stories {almost} that you met so-and-so.

Unless of course they "Walked on the Moon."

{Bonus points if you know what comedian this is in reference to!}
Who are some famous people YOU have met? Do tell me your adventures!

How to be a Princess

"They can't order me to stop dreaming."
Cinderella

Some of you may wonder why I am called the Polka Dot Princess. The reason is actually quite simple. I just ADORE polka dots and well, every girl is a princess of course!
Currently, I work for Pirate and Princess Parties as Snow White and Ariel and in doing so I have learned a bit about what it takes to be a princess...

First off...

If you happen to be lost in the woods, just find a cottage full of dwarves. They are very hospitable.

2} Quick fixes are never a good idea. Never make deals with sea witches or eat an apple to make your dreams come true.
3} Love comes in the most unexpected places. Your prince may be disguised as a beast, a frog or a street rat.
4} When in doubt, sing! Any emotion can be expressed through a great Alan Menkan song.
5} Feeling lonely? Play dead. Prince Charmings are always wandering around looking for comatose maidens to make out with.
6} Being nosy may in your favor. Feel free to tresspass and go into that room he told you not to. You might find something magical!
7} Be careful what you eat off of. You never know what woodland creatures have been licking them clean trying to be helpful.
8} A princess' hair does not get flyaways. She gets gentlyfloataways.
9} A princess should beware of fruits and vegetables. Pumpkins tend to turn into carriages, apples turn out to be poisonous, peas tend to give you uncomfortable sleep.

10} When older women are ugly, they are super trustworthy but when they are are pretty, watch out! They are evil.

11} A true princess never trips or falls- she merely saunters vaguely downwards.
Ok in all seriousness, it can be difficult to be a straight up "fairytale" princess like that but it is possible to act like like a beautiful, kind and successful 'princess'.
Here is a list of qualities of a REAL princess:
  • she is kind

  • she is beautiful on the inside, and cares about how she presents herself.

  • she is gracious, understanding, and  forgiving.

  • she cares about animals and children, and in general all people's comfort

  • she looks for the good in life and in people

  • she trusts

  • she believes in herself

  • she is honest

  • she is hopeful, even in the presence of evil

  • she does not tolerate evil

  • she shows respect to all creatures

  • she mediates and attempts to help people get along

  • she lifts up her man {prince} she supports him, and believes in him

  • she is easy to please and enjoys life

  • she is generous

  • she is joyful

  • she accepts help and is grateful

Each day I try to be a bit more princess-like. I think its a marvlous goal to work towards.

Yard Sale Saturday

One of my families FAVORITE past times in the summer is to wake up early Saturday morning and hit all those glorious yard sales! Its amazing what kind of treasures you can find! But unbeknownst to many people, there are certain rules yard sale junkies and hosts must follow. Here is what a typical yard sale Saturday looks like:

First off-The night before, you need to think about what is it you want to find at the yard sales in the morning. It can be something you want, or something you need, either way-put it out there!
Friday night I decided that I wanted to find material to make new clothes and I wanted to find a bulldog (seems far fetched, but it doesnt hurt to put it out in the universe, you never know!)

Next-Wake up early! We try to be on the road by 7:00AM.

Make sure the car you are driving is A) Big enough to carry large(r) purchaces. B)Not TOO fancy because people wont barter with you if they see you driving up in a Cadillac. Luckily, we had our trusty old surburban. Perfect for yard sale-ing.

We stopped by Maverik gas station and fueled up...
 Breakfast of champtions, my friends.
Next rule: If you see cute little kids on the side of the road doing a bake sale, you must stop and get something. (Preferably snickerdoodles, if they are available)

 How can you resist these little cuties!?

 Always stop at yard sales that look clean! (Ok even stop at the dirty ones, you never know what they will have, just make sure you wash whatever you buy and bring hand wipes!)

If you bring your pooch, make sure you have water for them, becasue most the time they are just waiting in the hot car...
Just dont let them spill their water on your lap...
It looks like you peed your pants.

Remember how I made sure I thought about what I wanted to find at yard sale(s) the night before? Um... This is why...

 What are the odds I found my bully?!
This is Polly

Ok, I wasnt clear when I did my wishing the night before... I wanted to BUY a bulldog, and this cute little girl wasnt for sale. So be specific when wishin about what you want!
I still love her!

She kept biting her lips when she was playing with her ball.

  We went to a yard sale that all their clothes were 25 cents each! Talk about a bargan!
Bird bath:
They were asking $25
Grammy bartered it down to $15
Not too shabby.
BARTERING IS A MUST! Almost never pay for what they are asking. Most people expect to make deals.

Another must: GOOD SIGNAGE!
Meaning, when you have a yard sale, make sure your signs MAKE SENSE!

No one likes driving around searching for a yard sale that doesnt seem to exist. Use arrows, not addresses. Make them bright and noticeable!

This is an awesome sign...

To counteract what I said earlier, some people will NOT budge on their prices. The thing experienced yard salers, is that they go to yard sales to get a deal. Obviously. So they arent looking to spend the same amount on an item they could get new. So if you have a yard sale, keep in mind that if you have a new brand name shirt, still with the tags, dont sell it for what the tag says.

 If you go into a store, check your clothes before walking in. Mom had some price stickers come off on her clothes. :)

We got all kinds of treasures! From clothes, to household decorations to books and Cd's

Approx value: $400
Price we paid: $40

 This Aeropostale messenger bag was brand new and only... wait for it.... $1!

Brand new jacket with tags: Regularly $44

Yeah... we got it for 25 cents. :)

 All kinds of knick-knacks!

All in all, it was an AMAZING day. I had so much fun with my mom and my Grammy. I love Saturday mornings!

Yeah, we pretty much made off like bandits!
